open letter to Babylon Kino re: bill cunningham new york

Sehr Geerte Geschäftsführer Babylons Kinos Berlin, Mitte,

I want to draw your attention to what looks like a great documentary about New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, and suggest (read: beg) that you premiere it here at the best movie theatre in Berlin.*

I used to love watching Bill Cunningham's "On The Street" reports on the New York Times website. It was didactic and pared down to the point of perspicuity. I liked to think the slide show was an hommage to Chris Marker's LA JUTEE, but doubled-up the reports could work as crowd-raising pecha kucha.

Now there's a documentary about his life and process, and from the stills and critics, it sounds like the film is as much a hommage to him as to the city of New York and the daring dressers that make it sing.

His philosophy on trend scouting is an excuse to get out of the office:

"You just don't manufacture in your head that skirts at the knee are the thing, and you go and photograph skirts at the knee, you've got to stay on the street and let the street tell you what it is. There are no short cuts, believe me."

If you don't already love him, you should know that he rides a bike and he has no kitchen.

Here's the trailer...maybe something fun for Berlin Fashion Week (5.- 10. Juli 2011)?
