top 10 indie fashion films of 2011

It's Fashion Week in Berlin!  I've seen a few great uses of video to communicate fashion ideas, but the audio/visual aspect still remains in the background for most presentations.

All through 2011, the Business of Fashion have been keeping track of top ten fashion film spring and autumn.

Here's my list of indie fashion films that brought the genre forward last year.  How do I define indie? Basically, any brand not on the radar of style.com ...yet.

10.

At Home with Chloë Sevigny: Part 2 from Opening Ceremony on Vimeo.

There will be more of miss Sevigny later on this list...

9.

Girls in pretty dresses doing kooky dances was also a theme for Prada SS11, but this version is fun and surprisingly dark for a brand that I otherwise think of as cheerfully retro.

8.

Dutch labour laws allowed industrial designer to hire his three sons to work 3 hours a week painting this pine wood furniture any way they want. He paid them 1 dollar per piece.

7.

Colette Valentine from anja verdugo on Vimeo.

Candy-coloured, beautifully styled...its not easy to do innocence and lingerie without making it look smutty. Another fashion filmmaker to watch in 2012.

6.

Crystal Moselle is an exciting director from LA whose fashion films really deserve an entire post of their own. This could have been shorter, but I enjoyed hearing about Lim's process.

5.

Jennifer is always exploring abandoned buildings like this one to find great backdrops for her vintage photo shoots.  This video gives us the feeling that we are right there with her trespassing on beauty.

4.

22 Featuring Reyn Spooner from Opening Ceremony on Vimeo.

Gia Coppola's take on the "teenagers run amok in the sun" fashion video...because I have a film crush on her brother and pink smoke from an exploding watermelon is funny.

3.

Apple-picking in Ellijay from Drew Tyndell on Vimeo.

Somehow, halfway through this video, I was convinced that this was THE perfect outfit for apple picking. The music, the sun-flickering effect, barn animals... it all added to my suspended disbelief.  I hope to see more videos from these two.

please follow this link and sigh in unison through the ad that comes before the video:  http://www.fashiondaily.tv/lissabon-fashion-week-oktober-2011/look-me-monica-and-irina/

I am really digging the fashiondaily.tv "Look at Me" video series, featuring fashion-loving, regular people getting ready for a personal photo shoot.  The staccato editing style and the people they cast make this regular viewing, especially when they get out of Berlin to meet fabulous stylista's like Monica and Irina.

I wrote about Cass Bird in earlier this year. This is such a fun way to introduce a new collection - and some New York icons-in-waiting.  You forget they are selling clothes, but I always kept note of  the brand after watching this.

Any indie fashion videos I missed?  Please add links in the comments.
